The bizarre "Chianti bottle cactus" from the arid Caatinga of northeastern Brazil.
Potted seedling plant super-imposed on a pic of mature plant in habitat
Cultivated (seed grown) plants start life like echinopsis
They soon become ovoid
Then take on an elongated. columnar, form similar
to Trichocereus spachianus
Maturing seedlings unpotted to show root systems and start of mature
upper stem thinning and elongation
At approx. eighteen inches tall (plant on left) they develop loose
apical cephaliums
..... from whence emerge groups of floral buds
.......... followed by white nocturnal flowers and green fruit
