My cacti wont grow.

Post by Alexander »

Hoi
I have most of my plants for around 2,5 years, and they havent grown ever since.
No green tips at the epidermis and no new shoots.
They probably had to litle light, and to litle water ( ive changed that now).
Is that the problem or is it something else im not doing correct.
My cacti do look healty, im just not getting any sign of life.
I live in the netherlands (western europe), we have a sea klimate (mild winters and mild summers). A minimun -10c and a maximum of 30c.
They havent been in cold storige for the winter yet.
Hope someone on the forum can help me and my plants.
Great thanks.
Greetings alexander.

First thing I would try is a re-pot with a new soil that's is a good start.
Can you add some photos? Might be easier to give advice if we can see what's going on.

Is that just top dressing or are they potted in that? It looks like something similar to Hortag, Leca or Lytag usually sold for topping greenhouse benches or hydroponics. If you are growing in that you are growing hydroponically rather than conventionally in a nutrient rich media and so need to use half strength fertiliser every few watering's since there are no nutrients in the substrate. No water and no feed and they will hardly grow in that substrate.

Also, was the old potting mix removed from the roots when they were potted in this substrate? If not, the water may be running through without moistening the ball of the old mix that's around the roots. See -

Its just topping they grow in soil.
Some of them in a light soil, some of them in peat soil from the gardencenter.

You will lose some fine roots, no way to avoid it, but those roots will quickly grow back. You can wash away much of the peat with a spray of water, but that probably won't get it all - dig out what's left something like a skewer, chopstick, whatever you have handy that isn't real sharp. Then leave the plant with bare roots for several days to a week, in a dry place that's not in the sun - this will give the roots a chance to heal and avoid the risk of root rot. Then pot them up, but wait several more days before watering. They should do much better after that.

They might want a bit more light as well lift the blinds up a bit so there's nothing between them and the window. It is very surprising how little light gets through windows even though they seem really bright. While the plants look pretty healthy now once growing again they will need more light or they grow thin and week looking a condition called etiolation.
