Hello again,

Does the below cactus also look like it might be suffering rot? Quite a few brown marks on it that look quite mushy and soft.

Afraid Melocactus tend to go the same way with me in the UK. They don't seem to like our winter rest, even in the house. However I understand they grow quite easily in warmer climes.

This second cactus looks like Acanthocereus tetragonus ‘Fairy Castles’ - much less fussy about temperature than a Melocactus. Many of those marks just look like scars, but some do look suspicious. Anything that's actually mushy, or shows signs of spreading, should be pruned off.

Those are easy to grow from cuttings, if the tip of a stem you remove is free of the problem you could make a cutting from it, have a backup plant.

Could they be marks from scale?

Scales can leave a small scar, those seem a little bit large for that.
