Grafting Tephrocactus geometricus?

Post by jorgeq »

On various forums (including this one) I've read about using E. pachanoi, E. spachianus, Austrocylindropuntia subulata and O. ficus-indica as stock for grafting T. geometricus.

I have several questions for people:
Do people have any one favorite that gives the fastest growth?

Also, does the growth of the scion still come out spherical or does it come out more cylindrical because of the accelerated growth?

Austro and Opuntia may take less time and overall last longer because of the close relation but Echinopsis will most likely give faster growth.

Myrtillocactus is a favourite stock used for fast growth by the Continentals, but it is tender, so for hardy scions if you want to take them down near freezing a more hardy stock is preferred like Echinopsis or the Opuntia's mentioned.

Use a slower growing opuntia. I tried ficus indica for some scions and it pushed growth way too fast. Maybe use a smaller pad?

I use Austrocylindropuntia subulata for all my Opuntia grafts
Not sure how fast or slow it is compared to other stocks
but it is very hardy

Does it produce good results and it takes scions easily? Somewhere on the forum it was stated it doesnt take scions easily and growth is very slow

It does take scions easily, I had problems with Cereus type stock accepting opuntia scions.

Here are some of my grafts

Thanks for the info! It would be a great replacement to grafting on opuntia ficus indica
