Re: Ubelmannia blooming in november
What an impressive looking cactus, and beautiful flowers! Does it usually bloom this time of year?

Yep the pictures are taken today. It has 5 flowers now and like 8 more still open in coming 1-2 days so I can make even more pictures.

Beautiful plant! But it would be better with its own roots. That's my opinion.

Thanks!Fatich wrote:Beautiful plant! But it would be better with its own roots. That's my opinion.
I cannot grow Ubelmannias on their own roots. Russian climate is deadly for them...
But I have a plan to reroot it with a much shorter portion of lower plant and make it a hidden graft.
Right now I have a U. Eriocactoides adopting to existing as a hidden graft. This one had buds so I posptoned the operation to see how it will bloom.

Thanks alot!

I've got a Mammillaria karwinskiana ssp. karwinskiana that is currently flowering. Weird November weather is the cause, I guess.
Re: Ubelmannia blooming in november
Never heard of Ubelmannia minninensis f. rubra
But I do know that we call that plant Ubelmannia buiningii
http://cactiguide.com/cactus/?genus=Ueb ... =buiningii" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
They are one of my all time favs, and all mine are flowering now too,
they flower several times a year
I have several on grafts and several on their own roots
They would be considered quite difficult, I use a mineral soil, keep them warm, and don't let them go completely dry in the winter for long periods of time. I think some people kill them by keeping them too dry in the fall and winter, when they do get rain in habitat.

I keep all my plants in mineral soil... I find that a lot easier then using organic soil. And it's more difficult for me to give cacti a cold winter as they grow in my home on a windowsill. So I have lots of Brasilian cacti who need warm winter with some watering and that's not a difficulty for me. On the contrary, this makes them easier for me

Then growing Ubelmannia is a good choice for you.
They are great plants,
I have a grafted Ubelmannia gummifera minninensis and it's very different than the plant you posted
The U. buiningii are very slow, my 2 big ones on their own roots are barely 4 inches tall and they are at least 20 years old.
To propagate, I had to graft seedlings on to pereskiopsis, then re-graft onto bigger stock after a couple years.
I posted photos on my members thread, but can't find them on my photo discs yet.
