Which Copiapoa krainziana is best?
Which Copiapoa krainziana is best?
This little one is tagged as var scopulina, for what that's worth in this varied species. It does have very nice, quite stiff, white spines.
This much older plant is the fairly standard "hairy" version.
This slightly lop-sided one has darker stiff spines.

According the Roger Ferryman and Graham Charles the brownish spined (and stiffer spined) ones are part of a hybrid swarm extending up the valley between the coastal Copiapoa's and C. krainziana further inland. R. Ferryman habitat pictures:-

Stiff spined "C. krainziana"
The brownish spined form is often called brunispina. but Ritter later named it scopulina, though strangely a lot of white spined krainziana type plants go around as scopulina. Whether collected seed from them also produced white spined plants I do not know-

I like the one with the brownish spines, it's just got more going on.

My memory is not what it was these days so I forgot we discussed this previously on the BCSS Forum with some who had been to habitat:-
