A disappointmet and a word of advice:

I imagined the roots of this one would be impressive. Not quite...

Don't wait to break apart your fat rooted species' community pots, or you risk ending up with something like this:

Hard to imagine how those roots could hold up those bug stalks.

I wait until the pots are no longer the right shape :(

That is exactly what I do. Had to change that routine a bit for the Turbinicarpus because those twin heads had moved from the adjacent pot to the one next to it (that's not a plant for those with limited space). The Ariocarpus, however, had made a round pot out of their original square one. :D
