What or the most wanted or fashionable cactus?
Or maybe should ask every ones favorite. I am pretty new at this but as of right now I think mine is Echinocereus rigidissimus.
Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway. JW
Re: What or the most wanted or fashionable cactus?
Asking everyone's favorite is probably better as you suggest. I've never considered one more "fashionable" than the other. Most wanted usually refers to really rare ones that collectors want but are in limited supply. They are likely things you haven't heard of if you are new to this.
Anyway, you can't go wrong with E. rigidissimus (see my avatar!). I'm also very fond of Astrophytums, especially A. caput-medusae. In general I like the small, oddball cacti. Blossfeldia, Aztekium, Puna, and several species of Copiapoa are among my favorites. I'm more into non-cactus succulents overall though, so that list is much bigger.

Re: What or the most wanted or fashionable cactus?
Trichocereus panachoi seems to have quite the following. Hmmmm...
Re: What or the most wanted or fashionable cactus?
Echinocereus.....the more its flower shines...the merryer.
Re: What or the most wanted or fashionable cactus?
Good question... I think my favorite would be Pygmaeocereus. Their flowers are divine!
Buying a cactus a day will keep the madness away.
Re: What or the most wanted or fashionable cactus?
Pelecyphora aselliformis.
Z, in (mostly) sunny Lisbon.

So does Lophophora williamsii.
The most fashionable is usually the presently hard to obtain as mature plants or to propagate, such as Pelecyphora aselliformis or Pelecyphora strobiliformis in spite of being in cultivation for decades
Or even Yavia cryptocarpa.
The most wanted is always the one presently impossible to obtain in your area, I suppose Aztekium valdezii and Mammillaria bertholdii in the UK at the moment:-

But as you indicate plants go in fashions and eventually the impossible to obtain becomes only the hard to obtain and then generally available and so goes out of fashion as people seek the next rarity.

Re: What or the most wanted or fashionable cactus?
Are these legal to ship (other than to CA)? I would love to get my hands on one for collection purposes and potentially further study if it grows well. Never seen them for sale, though.DaveW wrote:So does Lophophora williamsii.

First time I hear of this species. I am not into Mammillaria, but this one looks rather nice. I like Ariocarpus (kotschoubeyanus), which it resembles...DaveW wrote:and Mammillaria bertholdii in the UK at the moment:-

And if you want seeds, you can send me a PM too.
Re: What or the most wanted or fashionable cactus?
I think in some places in the US only L. williamsii is listed as prohibited, not Lophophora the genus since that would cover them all. However whether the enforcement authorities could tell the difference between L. williamsii or fricii and decipiens etc is doubtful!
It's always the people who misuse alkaloid containing cacti that spoil it for the genuine collector.

Saxicola
I like so many, and then add the non-cacti and the list is just too long
A. caput-medusa
I'm about to give up on the Yavia though, they split their sides, and then only last a couple years until the junction of stock to scion rots.
Maybe I won't give up on them if those Yavia seeds I just planted germinate and stay alive.
Re: What or the most wanted or fashionable cactus?
L. williamsii is illegal throughout the US because Federal Law prohibits it. As far as I'm aware only California bans the entire genus. So if you aren't in CA and want to stay on the right side of the law I'd go for the other species instead. Are you likely to get in trouble for growing a plant for horticultural purposes? No. But you could, so if you get one just be aware of the possibilities.graffiti wrote:Are these legal to ship (other than to CA)?
