Nice! Hope to see mine bloom like that some day! Are they self-fertile?

It will happen Tristan! I do believe they are self fertile, although I do hand pollinate the flowers on my plants using a very fine watercolor paint brush -- just to make sure.

I get bountiful crops of fruit from older mature plants like the following:

Growing in 8" (20.3 cm) round plastic pot

I have had this plant (grown from seed) for many years. I am always struck by the change in physical appearance of this species -- the stem elongation, frosted silver coloration/shading of the epidermis and the graying of the denser spination -- as the plant ages and "weathers".

I actually like the look of juvenile plants of this species better than the "old grizzled" specimens:

Another mature specimen with a striking physical appearance -- silvery white epidermis and graying of the spination.

Hi James, wow, I admire these ones that you have!
Such an interesting genus, although I am not at all successful at growing these ones... I still didn't find the best method of growing them, I have tried some different soil mixes, sun and shade conditions...
I have only about 5 of them now, I had more but some got sick, only one flowered until today and didn't produce any seeds, or I would have grafted some seedlings already.
Almost every other brazilian cactus I have here grow very nice, but these usually don't.
Thanks for the pictures.
