Too fat?
Too fat?
Pediocactus nigrispinus has been sucking up the water and storing it away for the hard times it knows will be coming ...

Re: Too fat?
You might not like this one in another few months when it is half the size, a spiny husk hiding from the summer heat.

Re: Too fat?
googled some pics, They look evil when they dry up. I prefer the fatty version you have here....Can you keep them watered so they stay fatty like this?

No. They will die if you water them persistently in hot weather.LLLcacti wrote:googled some pics, They look evil when they dry up. I prefer the fatty version you have here....Can you keep them watered so they stay fatty like this?

Re: Too fat?
Just in time! My Pediocacti expended these days too. Not as much but those are outside in my rock garden and it's dry here.
If your cacti mess in your job just forget about the job.

Re: Too fat?
This (I hope past already) winter was mild - just once fell to -26 C, it usually gets down to -33 C for a couple of nights and the common minimums are ~ -15 to -20. These days is above 0, even got to +18 yesterday.

Re: Too fat?
Well my first authentic (not indoors under lights) flower opened today. On Pediocactus nigrispinus, but not this seedling. I though P. paradinei would be first, but it is still a fat fat bud. It hasn't been below about -4C in the greenhouse all this winter, but they seem to be coping with it.

Re: Too fat?
Still looking and smelling good.
P. paradinei still not flowering. It has a nasty habit of aborting when temperatures get got too quickly.

Re: Too fat?
Very cool! What if you put some ice cubes on the plant, to keep them cool?

Re: Too fat?
We get plenty of ice here in winter, but its hard enough keeping the plants dry without deliberately adding more water
