Some do suggest that in habitat the seed is not shed and only germinates when the plant dies, therefore needs to be reasonably old. The cut section scrolling down the link below shows how the seeds are firmly held, but I don't know if anybody has ever observed any being squeezed out when the plant gets turgid, therefore maybe they are only shed or "planted" on the plants death?:-

If it's true that the seed germinates in the remains of the old plant, perhaps we should not throw our old dead luethyi's away but "set them" and see if any retained seed germinates in the rotting corpse?
Another possibility is the seeds are kept moist within the plant and germinate in it's rotting mass when it dies, therefore should not be allowed to dry out before setting? I did read where Kew could not raise a species of plant they wanted from seed sent from abroad, but was told it germinated freely in habitat in the remains of the rotting fruit. They therefore had seed sent in the stinking rotting fruit and had to brief Customs not to destroy it, therefore it was never allowed to dry out and set in the rotting fruit when it germinated freely.

Re: What are your favourites?
I'd be annoyed that I'd have to pick 10 cacti instead of spreading it out more evenly (maybe 5 cacti and 10 other succulents), but I'm not as purely cacti obsessed as some. I'm only picking one of each genus since. Most are picked for being strange or unique in some way, though some have to do with rarity. Here's what I'd pick:
Cacti:
Astrophytum caput-medusae
Aztekium ritteri
Ariocarpus fissuratus
Echinocereus rigidissimus var. rubispinus
Pilocereus azureus
Leutchtenbergia principes
Blossfeldia liliputiana
Frailea asteroides
Uebelmannia pectinifera
Puna bonniae
Other Succulents:
Euphorbia abdelkuri
Dendrosicyos socotranus
Whitesloanea crassa
Pseudolithos cubiformis
Adenium socotranum
Dorstenia gigas
Xerophyta retinervis
Fouquieria columnaris
Lithops optica 'Rubra'
Albuca concordiana

Re: What are your favourites?
That would be almost an impossible choice. Nobody is allowed to limit my collection.
But let try to play this game a while. Let's say they let me in a prison with 20 pots (or plants) only and provide perfect conditions to grow these.
10 fav. cacti:
1. Lophophora williamsii
2. Ferocactus fordii
3. Rebutia minuscula
4. Matucana paucicostata
5. Turbinicarpus schmiedickeanus
6. Stenocactus sulphureus
7. Escobaria minima
8. Mammillaria dixanthrocentron
9. A mature plant of Carnegiea gigantea
10. Hylocereus sp. (could be sveral meters long, right?) And everything grafted on it will be the same plant.
10 succulents:
1. Larryleachia cactiforme
2. Haworthia nigra
3. Delosperma sp.
4. Agave utahensis
5. Aloe arborescens
6. Adromischus cristatus
7. Haworthia minima
8. Sedum lanceolatum
9. Sedum divergens
10. Pachypodium saundersii
Ask me tomorrow and I'll list 20 different names..
