Tacinga inamoena varietal form

Post by jp29 »

Here is a miniature Brazilian Opuntiad that flowers and fruits prolifically in cultivation.

Tacinga inamoena (Marlon Machado's dwarf varietal form)

Interesting James. Tacinga's are not that common in the UK, I only can remember seeing one in the past. Certainly looks free flowering and worth cultivating:-

Certainly a bit more desirable than some of the other Tacinga's:-

This site for Brazilian cacti including the above link should interest Bruno and you James:-

Yes, Dave, I agree. The other Tacinga I grow -- T. funalis -- is essentially a solitary green stick that flowers only sparsely and infrequently:

New stem tip growth with rudimentary/temporary leaves

Emerging new stem growth and flower buds -- I missed the flowers

BTW, Dave, thanks for the links. I have visited them all on occasion. Here is a great one by Marlon Machado:

Tacinga inamoena (Marlon Machado's dwarf varietal form) is also listed in various references as Tacinga inamoena ssp subcylindrica.
You know how that goes, Sue -- use the name that suits your fancy. I couldn't find any "for sale" listings online, but it propagates easily enough from detached pads. I can send you a couple if you wish -- no spines, but watch out for those very tiny and irritating glochids!

Hi Dave, thank you. I have read some interesting articles on this site.
Eddie esteves wrote a lot about his cacti adventures in Brazil, he was very often with the german Pierre Braun, searching for cacti. Maybe some articles are available only in the portuguese version of the website, but it might be easy to understand them using an online translator.

Hello James, Marlon Machado´s website has been also one of my favorites, there are some very nice habitat pictures there.
Unfortunately both websites are no longer being updated, though I understand that the authors might be busy with other projects.

By the way, this is now a separate species. It's no longer a subspecies of T. inamoena, so it's now referred just as Tacinga subcylindrica.
Your plant looks good James!

Best wishes!
