F. grahliana by the look of it. Don't want to steal p&n's thunder here, so I'll post a pic of mine in the end-of-summer review I'll cobble together soon. Beautiful species, and it tends to be generous about pups and flowers when it gets enough heat in the growing season.

Not always your first, but the first flower you have seen! Frailea flowers tend to be fairly fleeting and unless you go into the greenhouse or where they are at the right time you can often miss them. In habitat they often grow among moss in quite damp conditions at certain times.

Many say they open their flowers only when it is hot and sunny, but to quote the Brazilian botanist Marlon Machado:-

"Fraileas don't often open their flowers, but you stand the best chance of seeing them with their gorgeous, golden flowers open in the heat of high summer, after a watering early in the day so that the humidity is high, and even better if the weather itself is thundery and sultry. Mid-afternoon is when you are most likely to find them open."

If you are out at work all day you can often miss them, that is unless they flower at the weekend.

Wow, Marlon's quote describes exactly what we have right now -- L.A. is in a heat wave, and a big tropical storm hitting Cabo threw a bunch of humidity up into SoCal.

That's my problem. I have about 5 or 6 buds on my grahliana, and any one of them could suddenly go into flower with this heat. The wave is supposed to be over on Thursday -- probably just in time to miss whatever flower(s) pop out before the weekend.

Frailea's in habitat tend to be small single headed plants, but evidently this one is an exception:-

As said before they also grow among mosses as well as between rocks etc:-

Just come back from The Cactus Explorers Weekend in the UK and a talk showing the plants in habitat said the plants grow in hot humid conditions and some in occasionally wet places during the growing season, therefore don't like to be too dry for too long when in growth.
