Mid-July flowers

Post by fanaticactus »

We're just recovering sun from a few days of very showery weather. Nevertheless, the warmth encouraged a few buds to open. First is my long-awaited E. subdenudata to open. Of course, I forgot about it the first night, but it was still beautiful the next morning and lasted all day. Nice flower with a faint lily-like scent but very odd-shaped plant. I think it's telling me it needs repotting with some fresher, looser substrate.

Here's a new one in my collection this year, Lobivia haematantha v. haulfinensis--first two in the morning, then a bit wider open in the PM.

A replacement G. bruchii for the one that got winter-killed; one picture as it was the first day and then wider again the next day.

Plus, I had single blooms on the R. fiebrigii, L. hybrid "Rose Quartz" and the white-flowered Chamaecereus; no photos this time. As a footnote, I finally got some flowers on the O. humifusa in the cold-hardy garden. I think the bitterly cold winter and chilly spring delayed them this year.

Interesting - your humifusa seem to have a touch of red in the centers. Is there that much variation? Mine are very clear, lemon yellow. Of course, NJ's official weed. Sue

Opuntia humifusa in the narrow sense has concolor yellow flowers. The plants with red centers are either hybrids are a population that is related to O. humifusa but recognized by another name. Cactus botanist Lucas Majure has recently published on this group and cleared up some of the identification problems.

I took the subdenudata out of the pot to wash off the roots and there weren't any! I was correct. This one needs tons of TLC!

Thanks for the words on the "humifusa", A. Dean Stock. I had to go back to a much earlier post in which Andy_CT, who sent me those pads to start my CH garden, gave the name as "caespitosa" which, apparently, is an unrecognized variety (?) of "humifusa". I'm guessing this is a result of too much "lumping" in the current taxonomy as reflected in the synonyms pages of the Guide. The true, or perhaps more accurately, the narrowly-defined "humifusa" is the one in the recent post of my CH garden in "Outdoor Cacti".
