Re: Favorite Echinocereus?
I never met an echinocereus I didn't like.
Here are a few I just happen to have on my phone. This is one of my showiest. Came tagged as coahila, but never really determined exactly what it is, and don't care. Wish I could be there.

Peter, I'm sure that E. viridiflorus goes farther north. You'll have to excuse my sense of the map since my world ends somewhere in western Colorado. I've seen E. viridiflorus in Wyoming and South Dakota so that is certainly north of the most northern records of O. mojavensis on Islands in the Great Salt Lake.

Re: Favorite Echinocereus?
Echinocereus pectinatus var. rigidissimus. Took me a long time to find one of these cactus, first read about it in funky book called "what kinda cactus izzat" way back in the 1960's , it had a pencil drawing of it with the caption "hands off partner". Many impostors before I found the real thing. I had a Echinocereus pectinatus "rosa" but that was as close as I could get back in the day.
A few years in Phoenix I found it and plenty more cool cactus.

Re: Favorite Echinocereus?
This...I have grown these outside here in wet, cold Western Washington for 18 years, and have never lost one. I have taken to calling them "The Immortals" because you cant seem to kill them. Mine are loading up with buds right now, will go off in another monthcortez753 wrote:Well if I had to pick just one it would be E. triglochidiatus v. gonacanthus. It's big, It's cold hardy, and it's big red flowers are just beautiful. I have one by my front door step and people just can't believe it stays outside year round!

Echinocereus ferreirianus lindsayi
There is an Eriocyce-ness about it that I love.
I have good luck with many in the genus, ground planted in San Jose. Once they get started they're fine but kind of touchy from seed.

Re: Favorite Echinocereus?
As my avatar suggests, I am partial to E. rigidissimus v. rubrispinus. However, I am becoming quite fond of a rare one Tony gave my over a year ago that just bloomed for me for the first time (probably a division of that exact plant in his post above!). Echinocereus pentalophus f. albiflorus. The species isn't rare but the white flowered form is.

Re: Favorite Echinocereus?
Nice plant,
I had one given me as albiflorus in the past, but when it flowered it was just a bit paler pink. I did once read that they all came from a single collected white flowered plant that was found in habitat, but that the area it came from has now been obliterated by development, but how true that story is I do not know?

While we are on the subject...I don't know exactly how big this Echinocereus rigidissimus is, but I wear a size 13 boot.

Re: Favorite Echinocereus?
I was not initially a fan of these but my son brought a rigidissimus home and now I cannot wait for it to flower. They are definitely different to my other columna cacti and act more like my lophs with the swelling and contracting with water really quite cool. Although I do quite fancy the Echinocereus triglochidiatus “inermis” they look really cool.
And as the walls come down and as I look in your eyes
My fear begins to fade recalling all of the times
I have died and will die.
It's all right.
I dont mind

Re: Favorite Echinocereus?
If you like virtually spineless ones like inermis Ade look out for E. morricalii. Sometimes listed as E. viereckii ssp. morricalii
Re: Favorite Echinocereus?
I have one like that. Only too small to flower yet. But I'm still young ain't I?!
Re: Favorite Echinocereus?
Should flower this year Maja as if it's the one I sent it's from the same batch of seeds. Those stems are only about 6-7cm high.
Re: Favorite Echinocereus?
I will go out (this instance) and see if there is anything to see. No. Not yet. But I Will 3wait as I said.
