Re: Updated seed lists
I have very bad experience with cactus Moravia international, I ordered some seeds of their old catalogue. Mostly ferocactus. Then I asked them if they have something else of feros to offer. They send me a plant list where some desirable ones were for good prices. I was told that I am first one to get this cataloue as it is not yet published online. I picked 4, F.Crysacanthus red spine, F. echidne with extra long spines, F tortulispinus with red curved spines and nice form of F. Gracilis. then I considered that 16EUR delivery is too much for 8 plants as 2 plants of each was a minimum. I added to order rest 6 variations of ferocactuses. I waited 6 weeks until received bill. Bill stated that F.Crysacanthus red spine, F. echidne with extra long spines, F tortulispinus with red curved spines and nice form of F. Gracilis were sold out. I tried to explain them what they promised that I am first one and how the plants be sold out if I were first and if I can not get those 4 I am not really interested in order but I still want to get just seeds. To that they replied that they are not interested to work with me and forbidden me to contact with them in future. At this moment Cactus Moravia and cactus hobby Brno do not reply on my emails at all
Re: Updated seed lists
In the 1960's I acted as an agent in the UK and collected the money for a Dutch seed firm, now long gone. He told me with some dealers any plants or seed in short supply were always reserved for those who put in large orders. He also said he got many orders by return of post for seed from the Continent which were as large as my weekly wage at the time. I suppose it is good business practice to look after your larger customers first, but orders not being taken in strict rotation can annoy and loose you other customers.
Also being first to get a catalogue before it goes online can often mean you are among the first, not the only one, since probably his best customers get one too. My dealer friend also told me he had dozens of orders back by return of post as soon as the catalogue was published, so with material in short supply even if they work on a "first come first served" basis they can have sold out before they get your order, particularly if you are ordering from another country.
If they sent you a catalogue, that will take time in the post, therefore they could have put the list online immediately after sending it to you and have received orders by email before you even received the catalogue. These days they will have many ordering by email and paying by PayPal as soon as a list is published, therefore their orders will usually beat any coming by post.
Also to make catalogues look extensive they will often include plants or seed they only have four or five available of, so very few will actually receive them. To stand a chance with matertial in short supply your order has to be in as soon as you see the list. In the old days as soon as you received the catalogue with your order back the same day by post and even then those in the same country as the merchant would have a faster postal service.
These days however with online lists and email ordering and payment everybody around the world does stand an equal chance. However I have heard that some E. European dealers can take quite a time to supply orders even though the species is listed in their lists. Evidently they often do not grow all the plants or produce the seed themselves, therefore rely on it coming in from other dealers later, so sometimes in the end don't get it at all therefore you get a "sold out" notice.
You could always try Mesa Gardens for Ferocactus seed since this passes freely over EU borders even if plants don't:-

Wait for January, for the Mesa Garden seed list. And in februari for the MSG seed list (members only). And ADBLPS and Succulenta could well have some intersting mesembs too. You will see late November.Pushrestart wrote:Lots of cactus, wish there was more mesemb opportunities.

Re: Updated seed lists
hi, i see some great seed distributors listed here. I am into different pseudolithos right now and am wondering who carries different ones. i have plenty of cubiformis and whitesloanea crassa, but only a few sphericas (sp) and mccoyi. i would love to know who can provide any of the other types.
Re: Updated seed lists
I got some P. mccoyi from Mesa Garden three years ago.
It is still on the list of January (although probably sold out by now, so you should see if it is on the new list in January).

Re: Updated seed lists
Their excel file was not working for me, both on mac (I could enter something, but the amounts of portions was indicated as the amount of euros) and windows (where I could not fill in anything at all). I hope it does work for others. First time I had this sort of problem with seed lists...Aiko wrote:Cactus Hobby Brno has been updated: http://www.cactus-hobby.eu" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Seems to be working for me, give it another go Aiko!
We sailed through endless skies
Stars shine like eyes
The black night sighs
The moon in silver trees
Falls down in tears
Light of the night
The earth, a purple blaze
Of sapphire haze in orbital ways...
