Small opuntia species

Post by Glochid Fingers »

Hi all.
Are there any particularly diminutive opuntia species that grow low to the ground and still have flat pads? Like 4 inches or less max plant height would be awesome. I would like to make a dish garden with some very small opuntia:)

I have opuntia basilaris var 'baby rita' growing in 4" pots. The pads are only about 2 1/2 X 1 1/4 inches.

Tunilla sound about right for what you are lookin for. I do not know any Cacti in the opuntia genus by name to recommend but I know there are mini growers in there.

There's also a few O. fragilis hybrids that would fit that bill. One I used to have was Opuntia fragilis "Wenatchee" from Dixie Dringman.

I think what you are looking for might be a little known S. American Opuntioide called Airampoa. The one that is making the rounds here is A. picardoi, its pads are about an inch around, it is a mounder/creeper, and it has bright red flowers to top it all off. I am sure you will be pleased.

On another site I saw something called tunilla picardoi. Could it be a synonym?

Agree Airampoa's or Tunilla, species usually found listed under Opuntia as well:-
