You didn't mention the scent! This one has a tantalizing, intoxicating scent! Kinda lemony, and very much like Datura smells.

Hmmmmm. Dunno why! Every one I have ever seen is highly scented. Weird.

It might be the same as in Echinocereus viridiflorus. Andy and Jason informed me that not all have the scent. Of course, I've been burying my nose in them here and got nothing! 8-[

The time that you sniff them can make a difference, too. I find that the scent sometimes isn't released until a while after the flower is open and it can have completely faded by morning.

Interesting. I think I may get myself another specimen and see if it's any different.

I bought one of these a couple weeks ago and it's starting to bud. The flower bud is so furry! It rained last night and the fur is still wet in one of the pics below.

I can't wait to see and smell the bloom!

Scent is mainly released when the pollinators are around, it is not intended for humans, therefore predominantly night flowering plants don't usually waste it in the daytime. With night bloomers like Echinopsis it is likely be released in the evening or at night when the long tonged moths that pollinate them are around, but may linger on until the next morning. With day flowered plants we are familiar with their scents because we are around when their pollinators are too. Of course some humans can smell scents others can't, so sometimes that is the explanation.

If you don't believe night flying moths can have tongues that long see:-

My echinopsis subdenudata had 9 flowers but no smell at all. I kept hearing about the scent and i was disappointed
