Interesting spines
Hello everyone!
Im looking to grow some cacti with interesting spination from seeds. I've seen some cacti where thick the spines wrap neatly around the cactus. Other options are mammillarias completely covered in white spines.
Or something like oreocereus trolli with karge spines and wool
Any suggestions?
I've attached pictures to demonstrate what im looking for.
Thank you.

Re: Interesting spines
Some ideas - these don't (just) have big fierce spines:
Cleistocactus straussii
Cleistocactus colademonensis
Espostoa
Ferocactus
Oroya
Rebutia heliosa & similar
Echinocereus rigidissimus v rubsipinus
Echinocereus delaetii / longisetus
Cephalocereus senilis
Epithelantha
Lots of options with big/fierce spines, including:
Ferocactus
Denmoza
Echinocactus
Stetsonia coryne
and at least some from loads of genera, including:
Lobivias e.g. ferox
Gymnocalyciums e.g. saglionis

Re: Interesting spines
Papery spines are another type of interesting spines - some Tephrocatus species, Sclerocactus papyracanthus, Leuchtenbergia principis (which also has strange, elongated tubercles that resemble Agave leaves). Not sure if that's a complete list, feel like I missed something.

Re: Interesting spines
Also Stenocactus crispatus (and maybe others) have both papery and 'normal' spines

Re: Interesting spines
Eriosyce senilis
Gymnocalycium bruchii var. niveum (available with both white and yellow spines, the later seems to be rarer)
Gymnocalycium spegazzinii and it's sub-species armatum
Echinocactus texensis because of its unpleasant sounding knickname - The horse crippler cactus
Pelecyphora aselliformis and strobiliformis

Re: Interesting spines
I suggest the following:
for colorful spines: Ferocactus latinspinus, Thelocactus heterochromus, Ferocactus pilosus, Ferocactus gracilis, Echinocereus viridiflorus ssp.
chloranthus
For white spines: Thelocactus mcdowellii, Mammillaria humboldtii
For neat spine arrangement: Opuntia aciculate var. orbiculata
Harald
P.S.: I also do have an Opuntia sp. that is a man-made plant, which does have long, pony-tail like hair tufts, but no spines at all.

Re: Interesting spines
Has anyone suggested the two true cephalium geni: Melocatus and Discocatus? They're very picky to grow, but many have fierce and/or interesting spines
A cactus and succulent collector who especially likes Ariocarpus. …Though I have a bit of everything! Want some pictures? See my flickr! I also do art and such.

Melocacti are on the top of my list. They're the first thing that drew me to cacti!gemhunter178 wrote:Has anyone suggested the two true cephalium geni: Melocatus and Discocatus? They're very picky to grow, but many have fierce and/or interesting spines
