Easy(er) cacti to grow from seed

Post by Shane »

I've never grown cacti from seed before, and was wondering what a good one to start with would be
Los Angeles, California (USA)
Zone 10b (yearly minimum temperature 1-5° C)

Fishhook cacti are like cats, they only like to be petted in one direction

Rebutia, ferocactus, carngeiea, opuntia, epiphytes..
Some are easier to grow from seed than wholesale.

Setiechinopsis mirabilis http://www.cactus-art.biz/schede/SETIEC ... abilis.htm

AKA Echinopsis mirabilis or Arthrocereus mirabilis. Small cactus that's very easy to grow from seed, flowers young. Short-lived, but produces lots of seed so you can keep growing new ones.

Barrel cacti are quite easy from seeds. Gymnocalycium baldianum, gymnocalycium damsii, echinopsis sundenudata, mammillaria prolifera to name a few
There are more cacti in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

I'd start out with a packet of mixed seed. They tend to have everything listed in the above posts and more. You should be able to get a bunch of different cacti to grow for you.
They can sometimes be found at the local gardening store or online for sure.

I,ve been reaserching mixed seeds, and so far noticed that 2 ferocacti have sprouted from it.*It was a bad sow so most didnt germinate. My septmber attempt was a helluva lot more successful, but the plants are too tiny to id yet* when they grow up just a little bit, ill upload photos and this forum will have its hands full...
