Germination rates/speed

Post by mdpillet »

Hi all,

Having sowed a lot of taxa last weekend (close to 500), and having gone through all of them this weekend, I started wondering about something. What are, in your experience, the seeds slowest to germinate? What about species with very low germination rates altogether?

Cyphostemma juttae has a reputaion, echoed by my own experience, of not germinating at all.

Hints are most welcomed with this species!

I've had some opuntia seeds that didn't germinate until over a year after I planted them.

Opuntia are like this, also had prolonged germination with Escobaria vivipara and Rebutia minuscula. After drying of soil and next watering some new seedlings appeared, several months apart.

These were from one batch (E. vivipara).

Another example of prolonged germination show these Notocactus seedlings in this small pot being from one sowing but germinated months after the very first did that. I think this feature is typical for many species of cacti.
