Very nice pictures and impressive germination results. It gives me hope for my first attempt at germinating. 7 days into it but no signs of any growth yet. I do like the larger pieces and will try that next time. Are the larger stones only on the top or through out the mix? I am trying to germinate Lophophora diffusa v. koehresii along with a mix variety. Any special concerns with the Lophophoras, I started them 2 days ago? My batch is under a light that keeps them around 83 to 91 degrees F. for 7 hours, now on a timer for 9 hours, then cools down at night to around 70 F. All trays are in plastic tops and pots are in baggies. Maybe its just patience. Hmmm, is it too late to add the larger stones? :-k

Really do like your seedling collection.....great work!

Thank you, I am very happy with my results. Yes the stones are through the mix, but I try to top of with the granit stones as the alge grow better on the pumice than on the granit. The last Lophophoras I sowed germinated very well due to fresh seeds and some nice weather with temperatures around 25-28C in the window. High temps can induce dormancy in seeds, so do not push it to high. Below 30C is safe in my experience. I do not use the baggy method, but sometimes I cover the seeds with some "kitchen plastic" until they germinate, then I take it of. It is some more work to spray them often but I do not mind that, I look at them every day either way :D . Many of the species I have sown has germinated within 21 days, most of them within 14 days, the longest has been about 28 days I think... It is a great joy following them from seed and I wish you good luck with yours. I think you should wait to add the larger stones as you already put them in bags and I presume you cooked the soil first? You can add a dressing layer later when they have grown a bit and rooted properly.

Hi Kristian. Thanks for the advice. I will wait on the stones for the next batch. Yes my mix was cooked, family did not appreciate the smell. I'll lower the temp a bit and try not to keep checking on them too much. Not sure of the freshness of my seeds though, there were no harvest dates on the packages.

Cheers

That was a bad and a good idea at the same time, just a little to soon. But I think the older leaves luckely did not absorb any water on the one that still are covered by the old ones.

Hello Kristian. Did you ever get your Stenocactus to germinate (May 11 post)? Just curious since I sowed a Steno mix 2 weeks ago but no signs of life yet.

Thanks.

No, it is just a couple of millimeters on top to let the seeds rest on something. They fall down the cracks in my standard mix otherwise. Regular media is just beneath the sandy stuff :)

That is my collection as for now :). I have one more, one Pachypodium rosulatum grown from seed, that seems to like the new more lean media it has been given. The leaves on the highest apex has been turning brown and falling of since almost midsummer...I don´t know whats wrong with it? Roots looked ok when I repotted it, but we will se how it goes, I think the trunk has fattened up a little the last weeks or so, so thats good :) .

It feels good when you look at a problem, change some factors and get positiv results in form of new healthy growth. Inorganic media with lots of aeration did the trick for this one. Planted seeds in spring 2014.

Thank you, and I know :) ...but hopefully we have more space in a couple of years, before it gets to crowded. I am thinking of putting some of them outside next summer, and then bringing them in for winter, so that will open up some space. But next years seedsowing will be very specific on species, just the really "I want that stuff" :D .
