Share your pets here
Re: Share your pets here
Hmmmm! A donkey mortadella?! I wonder how it tastes?
Re: Share your pets here
I think that was what was always used at one time. Disgusting, don't you think? How could anyone eat such a thing, they are so cute.

Well: Little pigs are cute too, but I can easily eat some prosciutto, ham or a nice steak.Tiggy wrote:I think that was what was always used at one time. Disgusting, don't you think? How could anyone eat such a thing, they are so cute.

yummy HAM. As for eating animals you raised, I could do it. I have eaten some beef that was slaughtered at the family farm, and I eat bacon from a pig I fed there, it was still BACON!

Re: Share your pets here
I know it doesn't make sense. Obviously it is much safer to eat meat when you know where it has come from and also that the animals concerned were well looked after and lived a natural good life, but we can't help it. We always get attached to all of them. We don't even eat our own chickens! When they are old and don't produce any more, we let them live the rest of their lives in peace. If one is ill or injured and has to be "necked", she then gets thrown down the mountain for the fox or birds of prey etc. Occasionally people have asked to buy the old ones from us, but I always say "No" They have supplied us with eggs for the years that they were able to and so have earned the right to a nice tranquil life in pension. They are pets in a way for us, in fact I wish I had the will power to not eat meat at all, we don't eat much as it is.

Re: Share your pets here
I was raised on the ranch and ate our chickens, beef, rabbit, squab, and swine. We raised these animals for food and not pets. An old layer chicken is so tough it take hours to cook and only for soups. We had chickens when the kids were growing up and got some eggs but after a while they stopped laying. They were more pets than anything else. If you eat farm raised, store bought is a joke. However, you can not raise animals in the city, laws.

yup. I live in Rural AZ, but I could get in trouble from the county for having certain livestock in my yard. however some people do their own chickens. Best bacon I ever had was at the farm.
Sorry Susi, I am a meat eater. I don't eat as much beef, but I do enjoy pork and fish.

I totally agree with what you are both saying, but I really only wanted the goats for the milk and it just seemed so cruel allowing and encouraging new life only to kill when they are so young and full of life. Maybe if we had had a big herd of goats it would have been a bit different. I doubt it very much though. There was always one or two that needed to be bottle fed and they became so attached it just broke my heart. We had loads of stray cats turn up here a few years ago and they all ended up in the house with us,all eight of them, plus our own cat plus the dog. One by one the strays have passed away and we have just two plus the dog, but each one of them left a alrge imprint on our lives.
