Lonely Cacti

Hi All,
I saw this lonely Cacti tucked in the bottom shelf at Lowes all by its lonesome self. So I rescued it but I have no idea what it is can you help? Its leaves turn a distinct reddish tint at the top sprouts and ends of bigger leaves. Is this a good thing?

You are on the wrong website, I'm afraid! This isn't a cactus, or even a succulent.
Your plant is a bromeliad (relative of the pineapple), more specifically it may be a variegated Aechmea.

There may be people knowledgeable about bromeliads here, but, with a few exceptions, they aren't really within the scope of this forum.
So maybe get googling or find a bromliad or more general houseplant forum if you have questions.

I had a quick search for a similar plant and thought I was on the right lines, but Teo's id looks spot on.

There are often discussions as to what constitutes a Succulent and some point out what we often exclude from the term are often more succulent than some we include. However though Pereskia is not really a Succulent it is a member of the Cactaceae so as most sites are named Cactus and Other Succulents so it get's in on the fact all cacti are named as included. Many other plant families have Succulent members, although most of the family may be non succulent. I suppose it's just a case of drawing limits otherwise you just finish up as a general gardening Forum or Society, though nobody bothers about the odd one being shown to identify if it is or is not a Succulent.
