Growth Over Time - Wisteria
Wisteria is neither a cactus NOR a succulent. But it IS a fascinating plant and I have had one request for me to post them. So it not being a succulent I came here to Member Topics.
The Growth Over Time aspect of this post only covers a month. And there are more pics from the first half of the month than the last half of the month. From when the plants first started growing leaf buds to full foliation. But that is part of its appeal ... that it should go from just buds to FULL COVERAGE foliation in just a month.
About 7 or 8 years ago, I built the Arbor depicted here in these pictures and planted Wisteria sprigs that were just sticks no more than 6 inches long ... SO small that I had extreme difficulty discerning the root end from the leaf end. But I was apparently successful, as all four plants sprouted and began growing. It's nothing fancy ... just a shady place in the yard. But it IS my favorite place on the entire 5 acres of the property to hang my hammock.
I have no comments regarding the pics as they are shown below, but the date of the picture has been appended to the filename that is displayed after each picture.

The flowers have done the same thing ... but in only two weeks.

THAT IS JUST GORGEOUS! I loved the photo in the sunset. Mine is a very long way from become as lush as yours. It must be very nice to hang the hammock inside the smell of the flowers. My favorite place to hang my hammock is under a very old jasmine bush.
One comment though, wisterias could use a very invasive pruning to produce more flower buds. But i guess a large plant is no so manageable.

You are very kind. Thank you. I had been recording the growth of the wisteria and it got too late in the day. I gave it a try, and it turned out OK. This cheap little $130 FujiFilm csmera does a pretty good job.ElieEstephane wrote: ↑Sat Feb 03, 2018 6:44 pmTHAT IS JUST GORGEOUS! I loved the photo in the sunset.
Yes it is, its just unfortunate that they last SO short a time. I can't imagine how nice it would be to hang my hammock underneath jasmine. What an extraordinary experience that must be.ElieEstephane wrote: ↑Sat Feb 03, 2018 6:44 pmIt must be very nice to hang the hammock inside the smell of the flowers. The arbor is 12ft (3.6M) square and 8ft (2.4M) to the bottom of the foliage. The wisteria has been growing for something like 8 years. I don't remember exactly. And the foliage goes up from there. I would love to prune it back severely, over the effects that it has on the plants flowering, but I'm afraid I just can't reach it. I've broken my back twice, and I'm afraid that my adventurers on a ladder are done with at this point in my life. So I do the best i can from the ground.ElieEstephane wrote: ↑Sat Feb 03, 2018 6:44 pm One comment though, wisterias could use a very invasive pruning to produce more flower buds. Elie
All of the pictures of my wisteria posting disappeared from within the posting. Fortunately for me I still have the original pictures on a thumb drive. So I re-accomplished the posting including the original pictures. Except for one in which I drew a line indicating the height of the lower limits of the foliage to show you why it doesn't get pruned any better than it does.

The last couple of days the database was moving so some of the picture could have been stuck on the old server before the dns was changed

I edited the posting... There was only 1 picture left in attachments... I deleted the remaining photo and then reinserted all 15 photos. After I submitted the edited posting, I looked at it and everything looked just fine. All the photos were there, no broken links, no complaints. Now, when I go look at it, although all 15 pictures are being displayed, it's complaining that there's something wrong with 10 of the picturesElieEstephane wrote: ↑Tue Feb 06, 2018 7:21 am The last couple of days the database was moving so some of the picture could have been stuck on the old server before the dns was changed

Impressive vine, I like that plant. Place to relax in their shade.

What a beautiful, vigorous plant this is! Is it the Chinese wisteria or the frutescens one?
I am thinking of planting one in a huge terracotta barrel type pot I have, but by seeing how huge it gets I'm afraid it would break the pot with its roots!

Wisterias can grow and flower in a suitable pot. It is very important to prune it to preserve its shape and induce more flower buds. So a pot of that size is okay if you maintain it

Thank you for your suggestion, I like this plant very much, although it sometimes is considered invasive (I've read people had a very hard time getting it out of their garden, it always grew back!), but its beauty is visible!

Keep it pruned back to a reasonablr size... The roots will adapt to the pot. Just know rhat the plant will, by itself grew nearly uncontrollably. Start out with a big enough pot to contain the eventual large set of roots. You'll love the result.

I really don't know. I'll be glad to do a little research on it if you'll reply back to this message with a "yes".

1) I decided to look anyway, and it turns out that there are many more varieties of Wisteria than just the two that you suggest. I did find some very interesting information at the website from the link below...DesertSun wrote: ↑Mon Feb 12, 2018 10:39 am 1) What a beautiful, vigorous plant this is! 2) I write this after having read what ElieEstephane wrote above. Listen to any advice that this man gives you. I have found him to be quite the expert in Horticultural terms. I replied to the same question, a little earlier, using different words, very nearly the exact same thing. Just put it in a big enough pot to begin with, knowing that the root system will be huge, and everything should be just fine.
And keep it pruned back to a reasonable size, as Elie suggests, and it will produce more flowers then you would get otherwise. Keep in mind that Wisteria grown from seeds can take up to 10 years to produce flowers, and those that I grew, from small 6" tall sticks, took 7 years from the date of planting before they produced the first flower. Of course that may be partially because the Wisteria grew so tall that I cannot reach it to prune it well enough.
