Welcome weeds

Post by mmcavall »

Some plants that may happen to sprout in our pots deserve some chance to show their beauty or value. At least as long as they survive under the succulent's growing regime.
Here are some I like:

Euphorbia prostrata in an Aloe pot:

Euphorbia hirta in the Pachypodium pot:

A clover in the Cereus fernambucensis pot (plastic pot taking some rain, that's why it is still alive):

A kind of fig tree (a future bonsai?):

An unknown plant, very drought tolerant:

And this not wery welcome Pilea microphylla, growing everywhere:

whitout a picture it is hard to tell anything, but I see 2 possibilities:
1. It is indeed a grass from a seed that looked like a cactus seed (grass family is very big and variable, some species' seeds are smaller and rounded than the average);
2. some sellers from ebay and similar sells grass/weed seeds under the name of cacti species. I've been cheated once.

I dont think it is your case, though

Lots of sellers, specially chinese, sell grass seeds as cacti seeds.

Could be a bulb like Tulbaghia. Basically looks like grass above soil, and the seeds are black and big. But the seeds do have an onion like smell. How about your 'cactus' seeds?

As far as i know , no.
And they looked exactly like a cactus seed, though more like a pachycereus/larger seed.

Not exactly. Google helped me. I knew, for example, that there are Euphorbias that are urban or agricultural weeds. As the weeds in my pots have latex, I googled "Euphorbia weed", and found them among the images that returned.

So called "clover" in the pots is actually some Oxalis sp. weed, I had it in my pots before. It is hard to eradicate and survives droughts but it's not a such problem.
My weeded Stenocactus vaupelianus.

I've had it in my daisy beds and they are pretty frost tolerant too.

I'm familiar with many of these in the Northeast US. Funny they grow in Brazil too. Guess that's why they're weeds...

It's cool to see them ID'ed. I've seen Euphorbia prostrata many times without ever knowing it was a euphorbia, although the milky sap should have been a hint

There are many species of Oxalis, they're found in most parts of the world. Some have been used as ground covers and become naturalized in many places. I had some in cactus pots, too, with tiny yellow flowers. They shoot the seeds out of the seed pods, that's how they wind up in your plant pots.

Haha, it's funny, I love Oxalis! And in fact, it has become very popular the last years as a houseplant also! I bought some to seed actually! :)
