I had never seen these before today, and was instantly fascinated by the lovely flowers and stout stalks, They're growing very near a couple of my large Agaves, which they may be parasitizing. They aren't succulents, but they are desert dwellers. Meet Orobanche cooperi, Desert Broomrape. Now I have to decide what to do about them, if anything.

Agave
"American aloe plant," 1797, from Greek Agaue, proper name in mythology (mother of Pentheus), from agauos "noble," perhaps from agasthai "wonder at".

They usually only come up after a good rainy winter season. Should be all kinds of rare bloomers coming out this spring.
