We have a bunch blooming in town right now. They are pretty common plants around here. I like them but I don't grow them because they make so many little ones and they grow all over where you plant them.

I just was surprised that it would grow in the SouthEast because of all the rain you guys tend to get down there. Hurricanes, thunderstorms, etc...

They are nothing like cactus when it comes to moisture. I see them growing in the coastal lowlands where the water table is about 4 feet under your feet. I am sure they can't grow in standing water but they don't seem to mind. People take them and dig them up and throw them away in the woods and they will root down and grow on top of the ground. Even the little ones.

Yep, agaves don't seem to mind wet as much as standing wet, and many can take the cold too, so they are good plants for the Southeast. I have had good luck with mine... only two deaths out of 65 or so species...

haha wow. I have lost a few from rot, and from HEAT/Sun...

I just never really though about them growing that well in Florida..
course with the TS coming through some of them might not be happy.

I don't think I've ever read a story about plants in the general media that doesn't contain at least one error. I take that into account when I read almost any regular news story.

Why is it so important when those flower over there?
Here in my neghborhood, there are at least 4 flowering Agaves right now!
In this whole city, there are at least 50 or so Agaves flowering now, and most are the large A. americana.

So why exactly is it so important that it needs to be reported on?

It is news in south Carolina because they don't get to see them very often there. In Texas there are many more than probably anywhere else in the country so they are more of a weed there. If you work on a tuna boat you won't be as excited as the guy who catches a tuna on a rod.

Because hardly anyone can grow them up there. Why do botanic gardens get all kinds of press and visitors when a Titan Arum blooms? In Indonesia it happens all the time, so who cares? Right?

the only reason I called the second one a fail is because they called the Agave a cactus AND not because of the reporting. Kansas doesn't have many Agaves I dont think...
