As if I'm not already far enough behind...

Post by daiv »

Well sometime in the next couple weeks I am going to have 16,000 tree seedlings to plant. As part of a land conservation program, the family land where I have my greenhouse, etc. includes planting these trees. While they make tree planting machines, we absolutely can't stand trees planted in rows like marching solders. So it will be a manual process. Not as bad as it sounds. I sure can think of a lot worse ways to spend a few days than to be out in the field planting trees. I'm looking forward to it and even better to seeing it 10 years from now!

There are already lots of Ash trees, Cherry trees, Junipers, and some others coming up in these fields. It was originally zoned grasslands, but there are too many trees to be considered grassland and not enough to be considered woodland. So we have to plant!

I am glad to see you are planting variety. I hate monoculture with a passion. It is destroying so much Florida land.

That sounds like a lot of fun to me. Wish I could help! :)
Talk about going green! :thumbright:
So I guess the land was previously used for farming and now you have to restore it to the way it was?

What a wonderful opportunity to document the growth of a forest! Might take a lifetime, but imagine being able to show a "timelapse" of something like that!

Takes about 50 years until a forest can realy be restored. The process of death and renewing and tree large enough to house creatures takes a long time though fruiting can sustain them for now. Pruning smaller shrubs can be a good way to help nesting birds for creating cover. Once the insects and microbes regain the soil the forest will regenerate quickly.

I sort of presented it in the negative above, but in reality I do love planting trees.

The area is in the transition zone from grasslands to woodlands. I think the town I live in has used the slogan "Where the forest meets the prairie" or something like that.

However, the land where we are going to plant the trees was farmed for many years. Up until the early 1980's. Then my dad put it in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). Since they were fields, they seeded some grassland plants and it was considered grassland for some 20 years. So since the trees are already filling in, we figured it would be nicer to see more of that.

Harriet, this isn't quite time-lapse, but we did plant 3 acres with trees in 1988. Here is a picture of them in 2000:

And here is a picture of the same hill last year. (This pic is from a different angle and blurry - I'll try to get a better one.)

what's interesting about reclaiming land is that often it doesn't take as long as you think to make it look like it used to. Getting the animals etc in takes longer..
who doesn't like planting trees? WE got a 24' box tree to plant on Sat when we go back to work at the habitat house. Lots of stuff go screwed up many times at our project. I will share some before and after pics when we are finished (and two inbetween ones, I didnt take many pics on the really hot days lolz)
Here's to you, all you insidious creatures of green..er I mean cacti.
