I remember I was about 12, although I can't recall what drew me to cacti. I do remember my mom having some sort of columnar cactus, but it rotted from the middle out. And then for a long time, she didn't want another having read the horror stories, I can't giggle without thinking of them, of scorpions or tarantulas bursting out of cacti.

Hi, fond memories of my early cactus obssession focus mostly on The Exotic Collection, Edgar and Brian Lamb's wonderful little homemade publication that came out every other month. I remember having my letter published in one of the 1975 international newsletters. I also remember trying to grow Haageocereus olowinskianus (spelling?) from seed purchased from them, without much success.
Anyone else remember The Exotic Collection?

Well the averages don't differ too much
Males: 38 have voted, and the Mean age is 41.9,
Female: 10 voted and Mean age 37.9
The medians would be mid 40's for the men and mid 30's for the women.
Caught the bug, hmm depends my first cacti was a rescued one over 10 years ago (I was in a flat with a shared kitchen and there was a small cacti in there that belonged to no-one and somehow surviving). So I adopted it. This last 4 years I've been growing Aloe's, but they keep multiplying and feinds don't want anymore - so trying something less prolific

Hi, Peterb,
don't ask me why or how I got to the dogs, no, to the cacti. I really can't remember, because that's 30 years ago now (so I was about 8years old). The only one that has endured me ever since is an old Epiphyllum. All others came and went...

G'day guys,
I'm still a bit of a youngun' (23yo male), but I've been fascinated by cacti since I was a kid. I got my first plant (a red grafted Gymnocalycium mihanovichii "Hibotan") at about eight years of age. Since then, I've been surrounded by various species of cactus and succulent. What can I say... it's an addictive, spiny hobby.
