Daiv, thanks for ID help above. I can see it now. The pattern around the eye. So it's a peregrine falcon! I'll quit calling it a ferruginous hawk. Your pictures of the Harris hawk are great.

The "birds of prey" can be so difficult to ID because of their various "phases" depending on age and/or season.

They can also vary according to location, for example, Red Shouldered Hawks this far south are often a lighter color than their northern cousins. (I'm told that southern Bald Eagles are smaller than the ones found in the north, but if the ones I have seen are "small" the "big" ones must be truly amazing!)

Harriet,
What are the flying birds in the first pic? Avocets?
Love the Tern pic!

Not Avocets, I think they are Willets. Until they fly away you would never know they had such dramatic markings on their wings!

Red-tailed Hawk, taken 7 AM this morning. Not much light to work with but he stayed long enough form me to fiddle with the dials.

No matter how you fiddle with him, he is a handsome bird!

Super cool shot Andy! Not hard to see where they got the name.
I notice no other birds are at the feeder.

Or squirrels! that's what he's looking for.
