Daiv,

Loons are really hard to get close to. They dive just when you almost have them in focus . . . They are probably my all time favorite water fowl. Listening to their calls over a calm lake at dawn and dusk is a slice of heaven here on earth.

I used to spend summers in MN and never saw pelicans there. Even living in CA for nearly 10 years, I rarely saw pelicans. When do they arrive in MN and do they raise a nest of young while up there?

Speaking of pelicans I saw a white one not too long ago flying while I was nearer to Phoenix, looked like it was heading to Lake Pleasant.

Nathan,
Pelicans (like many other birds) were a rare site here 10 years ago or so. Now they are very common and are here all summer. So I'm quite sure they are raising families too.

In CA, Brown pelicans were a pretty common site too. I used to see lots of them while sitting out on the surf board waiting for a wave to come by. It was always fun to watch them dive!

Another reason to be jealous of the West Coast types, they have so many more humming birds than our one and only Ruby Throated... I really enjoy seeing the little guys though, and those shots are not easy to come by.

I need to go catch some new bird images. I've been so busy documenting my c&s that the birds have been neglected. But, it has been so hot and humid lately that not even the birds want to come out!

Harriet, the birds here are very active in the early morning around 5-6am and late evening around 7-8pm. not a peep out of them during the day tho! :)

I need to get some more bird pics too. :)

I definitely have a favorite bird since I've moved to Fountain Hills -- I had never seen Night Hawks before! Even my dogs stop and watch 'em, realizing they aren't like other birds.

Well OK, Road Runners are high up on my list, too...

I have seen a few of those hovering around the lights for the intersection of I-17 and Coldwater Canyon Road in BCC.

I also have seen Roadrunners... I had one in my yard once.. my cat chased it but it got away...

And quail too.

Peter,
All your birds look exotic to me! We have none of those over here.

Nice. You have more then two. I have a pair that hang around my area of Black Canyon City. I have seen them flying together a lot. Looks like storms tonite. It is interesting to watch the smaller birds attack ravens.
