First flower
First flower
First flower on this Lithops anyway. It is over ten years old, so that is quite a wait. L. olivacea 'Red Olive' officially has yellow flowers with a white centre, but you can't see much of the white eye on this newly-open flower.

Re: First flower
L. hookeri doesn't officially have yellow flowers with a white centre but this plant does.

Re: First flower
Its pretty late in the season for all those yellow flowers, and this L. hermetica hasn't even started.

Re: First flower
There are white flowers, too. This is L. karasmontana ssp bella and ssp karasmontana.

Re: First flower
Stunning display Ian! Do any of them have a favorable scent in your opinion?
Re: First flower
The short answer is no. I find that only a few of the yellow flowers have any scent beyond a general "warm pollen" aroma, and they are usually quite sweet, honey perhaps. L. otzeniana is pretty good for that, but occasionally one or two others. The white flowers seem to have a much stronger scent. L salicola is very reliable and strong, but generally something from all the white flowers. The only problem is that I don't find it very pleasant. Not horrible, but a hint of sweaty sock. Other noses may vary.Pushrestart wrote:Stunning display Ian! Do any of them have a favorable scent in your opinion?

Sweaty sock that is quite the description. Thank you for sharing.iann wrote:The short answer is no. Very rarely is scent mentioned in flowering descriptions unless its wonderful or absolutely putrid, wish more people would share this sensory element

I also have a seedling hermetica with its first flower about to open. And another first for a naureeniae and that'll probably be it for this year (no optica large enough for flowers).
Since the Lithops flower season is coming to an end, here are a couple more from the past few weeks.
Dinteranthus vanzylii, with lines translucent in the sun.
Flowers in the shade on a week night (forgot to take a better one during the weekend ...)
L gesinae, showing that the distinction between yellow flowers and yellow-with-white-center flowers is somewhat relative.
L karasmontana 'Lateritia' opening up.
Old stalwart marmorata.
L bromfieldii v mennellii hiding under its buttercup umbrella.

Re: First flower
Looks like you've had a pretty good season too. L. optica seedlings have been flowering for a while. The adults are just starting now, perhaps because they got transplanted this summer. Nothing on L. optica 'Rubra' yet. Still early days, but it isn't unusual for them not to flower.
