Rot or Underwatering?

Rot or Underwatering?

Hi! A friend brought this succulent to me. Is this succulent rotting from a fungus perhaps? Or do you think it is severely underwatered? Not sure how to move forward in saving this one.

Does that pot have drainage? I would un-pot it and check the roots. If the roots look good then re pot it in a good cactus mix and a pot that has good drainage. If the roots are not looking so good, post some pictures of them and the experts will probably speak up.
