It's like Christmas in September!

Post by JustSayNotoCactus »

It's that season again, and no, I don't mean the arrival of our 4 month long incessant merchandising season either. I am talking about a season where the packages literally unwrap themselves, and eventually, even re-wrap themselves for next xmas. I am talking about Conophytum season here!

This photo was taken about a week and a half ago, and by now there are little flowers popping up all over the place, see if you can find the first flower of the season. There is nothing better than, as the bulk of the succulents are winding down for the season, watching an entire group of plants spring to life from their dead looking stumps. Some sheathes crack in half down the middle, some crack around the top like a can of beans, and some just blow away in the wind but they all will reveal a brand new plant inside. I will post more detail photos as the season moves along.

There's a white flower in the corner of a pot near the centre of the picture. C. pellucidum?

Hi Ian,

Yes, thats it, and I'm sure it is a pelly of some kind, cupreatum maybe.

Here are some pictures from today showing the progress of some of my Conos, despite it getting up to 102 degrees one day with temps solidly in the 80's and 90's before and after that.

Below we have Conophytum bachelorum X chrisocruxum:

Below is a mixed pot of Conos including ectypum cruciatum and angelicae tetragonum:

Then we move on to ectypum brownii:

Not sure what the one on the bottom left is either, my closest guess is pubescens.
