I have had a beautiful Aloe candelabra specimen from almost 40 years. As happens, the bottom leaves fall off, and the stem above the roots gets longer and longer. The plant now topples over within the large pot it is planted in. The pot does not topple over, the plant will not stand upright in the pot for long!
I was thinking about buying a very tall pot, and planting the roots very deep. The stem would be supported by soil, and only the part with the leaves would be above soil level.
Does anyone know:
1. Once the portion of stem is placed underground, will it put out roots?
2. If not, will it be safe, or will it rot underneath the soil?
Despite its age, the plant is healthy and in very good shape. I lost a similar specimen of Aloe ferox last year in the winter cold, so I cannot risk planting this beautiful Aloe outside.
