I'm a Mesemb noob, but aren't the stomata on this species located only on the sides of the leaves? So if you added top-dressing up to the level of the top of the leaves then it might help to limit water loss? :P I could be wrong.

Also, a trick I've seen Pediocactus and Sclerocactus growers use to keep plants cooler is to place the plant's pot inside a bigger pot with some kind of insulating material in the gap between the two pots. Not necessarily useful for growing indoors, but it might be useful? :-k

Happy growing!

Part of the recipe for success is probably high nighttime humidity which reduces water loss, but is hard to provide indoors.
I've had a min/max thermometer set right at the window all winter and today I checked it and it shows min 11°C and max 30°C and my plants are about 20 cm in from the glass. It will be going outside as soon as it warms up. I just can't keep it from splitting. It is either plump and split or shrivelled and thirsty looking. I water it about once a week.

I think I might have the watering corrected now. It looks like I just might be rewarded. I still don't know if the flower is white or yellow.

Good job! Keep it up and you shall see it grow nicely and maybe even flower! I acquired mine a month ago, doing good so far after repotting! I watered it only once (every 2 weeks or so) with occasional misting at night, they seem to like that. I also wonder if mine is going to be white flower or yellow!

There are subtle differences between the leaves of the two varieties, but very subtle. David's looks like it will have yellow flowers. Ivan's maybe white, not sure.

I've been growing Fenestraria for a long time.
This pot has several plants in it, gets direct sun all year long, and is watered regularly all year long as well.
Most of the flowers will happen in the fall.

Always amazed at how big the flowers are.
