C and D's Succulents
Re: C and D's Succulents
All the Cephalophyllum species and Antimima ventricosa need a lot of extra water for them to flower well.
Which they rarely get unless we have good rains.

Re: C and D's Succulents
I have been trying to get to your website and can't. I got there a couple weeks ago and sent an email on plants I was interested in, but didn't hear anything back after two tries. Any suggestions on what might be going on?
Re: C and D's Succulents
Our website has been hacked, and we are working on trying to bring it back on line
It may take a week the way things are progressing

That is a nice Cheiridopsis! Mine look nice, especially at this time of year, but rarely flower..

Re: C and D's Succulents
Those C.maughanii ssp.armeniacum are quite a show, lovely...you almost couldn't convince me they all belong to the same subspecies.
I planted Mesa Garden's "Pleiospilos mix" in late 2013 and some are purple like yours, I wonder if they are "Royal Flush".

Re: C and D's Succulents
C and D Plants is back on line.
We need to update our lists, since we just had a sale and I have a lot of new seeds to add.
Spring is here, and the succulents are growing like mad.
Some of the plants I got from Bill Hagblom confusion has finally resolved.
Many of the plants I got from Bill had the tag "Adromischus “makinii” D&P 98/41 Skimmelbreg"
Here is one But it appears to be a hybrid to me,
and then we found this one plant we got from Bill, a real "makinii" with the same tag
So it must be the real Adromischus “makinii” D&P 98/41 Skimmelbreg
and Bill put the tags onto the hybrids mistakenly
Here is the real Adromischus “makinii” D&P 98/41 Skimmelbreg It's a beauty.
I will have sale plants soon.

Re: C and D's Succulents
Nice Adro!
re the location designation 'Simmelbreg' - shouldn't that be 'Skimmelberg' ('mold mountain'), also home to a few Cono species?

Re: C and D's Succulents
You are correct Astro
Skimmelbreg
Here is another interesting Adromischus Bryan Makin, Breetkriet
They look like beans rather than fat paddles, so hence the name "Mak n Beans" Adromischus bicolor, green form Adromischus bicolor, silver form A. trigynis A. subviridis, full sun all year long A. filicaulis, dainty leaf form, "Indian Beads" A. marianiae 'hallii'
purple spotted form A. marianiae 'herrei"
Expresso Bean A. marianiae 'herrei"
Purple Coral after extra sun.

Re: C and D's Succulents
The color depends on the light intensity
The Red Coral will become very red or purple or even black when given a lot of direct sun light.
Purple Coral will stay green or brown in low light, and to bring out the purple you need some direct sun.
As you can see on your plants, the old Red Coral leaves are super rich Red, maybe they were the original leaves, and the new leaves are kind of neutral colored.
Some strong sun will bring out the colors better, and maybe some more water to plump them up with new growth.
BUT!!! too much sun might blacken them, try lightly filtered sun for the best colors.
The back story of the Purple Coral;
I got a bunch of seedlings of A. 'herrei', all slightly different and one was pure purple.
It was small, so I tried nurturing it to get big enough to propagate leaves, but it kept dying back.
There was another plant in the same pot that was growing like gangbusters, and it was kind of purple but no where near as purple as that little one.
A friend wanted some new 'herrei' clones, so I decided then and there that the fast growing "kind of" purple plant would be "Purple Coral", since is different enough from "Red Coral".
I'm still working on the "True Purple Coral" plant, it's still small and I haven't got a single leaf off it yet to propagate.
I have a couple more different seedlings, most are similar to "Hot Lava", so I'm not really propagated them for sale.
One sweet clone has really neat wild texture of the new growth, it's named "Popcorn Shrimp".
Another "herrei" that we have been growing for 15 years now, it is the most difficult and the smallest variety, we call it "Garnet Sand", it may be the same clone as original Herre collection plant.
I have a bunch more "herrei' varieties that Steven Hammer sent me 2 and half years ago, but most of them are still small, his plants must be malnourished since they take forever to grow, some still haven't formed a second leave yet. They all have locality data so when I do sell them, they will be named by locality.

Re: C and D's Succulents
Sooo true! Due to the location where I set them in my garden, I think the purple coral gets direct sunlight from sunrise to around 2pm and the red coral gets so from noon to sunset. Maybe the sunlight is stronger after noon, so the red coral gets its full color but the purple coral does not.
The back story is so amazing! Looking forward to see the super purple coral
The "Popcorn Shrimp" and "Garnet Sand" sounds great! Will you post some pictures of them

Re: C and D's Succulents
We would have more Adromischus varieties for sale, but now we like them to get big enough so they have several new leaves and good roots.
Several customers sent back complaint letters because they felt the plants we sent them were too small, and which to I will admit, they were small. And the roots dry up sometimes to almost nothing in shipping.
Denise takes complaint letters very seriously, and keeps wanting to hold back plants until they are bigger, which is a good idea for sure. And we need to have a bunch of them ready, not just 1 or 2.
One thing about Adromischus is that they have spurts in growth, so a plant can be almost ready to go, then stop growing for 2 months.
I received most of my plants as unrooted leaves, so I'm used to getting small plants, and I know for a fact that I can root it, so it doesn't matter to me. I just want the new species, so I will take whatever I can get.

Re: C and D's Succulents
Hi Craig, do you have a short list of succulents for a S. California landscape? I live in Moorpark Ca Zone 22 ? Occasional frost lots of wind never too hot.
I put bulbine frutescens in and its doing great.

Re: C and D's Succulents
I give the same advice to everyone who asks....
You should get 2 or 3 of every plant you want.
If you want to grow succulents for landscape you need plants that grow into clumps or mounds, or big single heads over a foot.
Mesembs and South American Cactus do the best in our climate.
You need to experiment, try different exposures, make sure you allow for rain, which should happen again, we hope.
