C and D's Succulents

[C And D]

I'm working on (thinking about?) a photo galley of Anacamposeros /Avonia.
They are great plants, there are many uncommon species, some are very difficult.

I post this photo because this plant has been in this pot for at least 12 years.
The Pot is 1 1/2 by 1 1/4 inches.

And it's time to give it new pot, so this is it's "before and after".
The plant makes a great miniature, and has been entered in a couple shows over the years.

The problem for me? What is the true name?
I'm calling in A. crinita,
but it could be A. baeseckei
or A. filamentosa ssp. namaquensis like the photo in the Gordon Rowley book
it doesn't look like any other of the A. filamentosas

It is really fat mesembryanthemoides

The first Bulbine to flower and go dormant is;

Bulbine mesembryanthemoides


Bulbine bruynsii is the second earliest Bulbine to flower and go dormant, which will happen later this month.

Fat Yes!
When I first started collecting, I showed my friend a Cheiridopsis pillansii I was growing.

He asked what made it special, and I responded with "I like the Fat ones"

And his surprise response was " at least you know what you like"

And here is the same plant with 20 years under it's belt.
The plant has been broken up and almost killed, but after a couple of good years of cultivation and then put it in a show pot, it now looks good enough to show off.

Well I'm a little disappointed with the photo quality after posting, it really loses a lot of sharpness.

But here are some close ups,
everything about this plant is fat, fat buds, fat seed capsules and fat flowers

Talk about FAT!!!

Look at the root on this Tylecodon sulphureus
It's a handful
The tag says I got it in 2002 from Steven Hammer, so it's at least 16 years old

I don't know what's going on under those huge leaves, but I bet there is a fat tuber growing under the soil.

The fact that I have these plants in the first place is "just plain ole good luck"
Since I have bought so many plants and seeds from Mesa Gardens and looked at there lists over and over years ago, I hardly ever look at their lists anymore.
But by luck I checked it out one day and lo and behold... they had Tylecodon singularis seeds AND Dactylopsis digitata plants.
Wow. I placed my order as fast as I could and they were out of them a week later.

The C. pillansii is really beautiful, one of my favorites I've seen here in your collection. The flowers are like fireworks, and of course those fat leaves and bracts are great.

I didn't even know they had any Tylecodon seeds at MG, sounds like I've probably missed them though. I've been trying to convince myself not to do another seed order this year, but these pictures are not helping!

I like the fat ones to CandD lol! When I'm mesemb snooping i tend to look for the more fleshy fat growing ones then the lanky thin one's. I like when they look a little juicy like if you'd bite into them they would be so tasty and good...but I'll try not to bite or chew on my mesembs lol!

Cheiridopsis as a genera is diverse,
and a great genera to grow if you have the room

I have at least 15 species growing now, and what I hate is another unknown species, which have seemed to be small part of my earlier collection.
But even still, another unknown will come out of the woodwork.

I thought this was an Ebracteola wilmaniae until it just now flowered, I do have a E. wilmaniae or 2,
But the tag said Cheiridopsis imitans, the tag may have been misplaced.
well it's neither C. imitans or E. wilmn.

For a medium sized species, I like this one because of the whiteness of the flesh.

I didn't want to pollute the other threads about the weather conditions here on the West Coast
But !!!
It was sooo hot.. this week that I have causalities
This is what I call "baked"
the leaves got so hot that they went over the limits of life,
If you take a smell of a baked plant, you can identify that smell as the sickly scent of dead

Is that a baked C. peculiaris? My own specimens are blushing nicely in the sun here in San Jose. They can get quite thirsty. Nice flowers btw!

No, it's some Glottiphyllum muirii seedlings ~3-4 yo
The C. peculiaris didn't seem to have a problem, and are working on some big buds for flowers in a week or 2

There are so many mysterious secrets that the Mesembs hold,
It's such a great group of plants to grow.

I have at least 15 Conophytum maughanii armeniacum
Everyone of them is a different color, on a couple plants every head is different color
But I don't always get the ripe cherry color which I love.
This one looks great this year, was it less water? more light? genes?

Unbelievable colouring on that C.maughanii ssp.armeniacum!
Seeing that interesting tiny A.evoluta makes me want to ask you whether your stunning A.ventricosa are flowering these days..
Would be nice to see some recent photos in flower.
