Mealy bugs on Dorstenias

Post by absolute0 »

I've noticed mealy bugs on some of my Dorstenias and other plants. I've read that isopropyl alcohol kills them so I wipe them away with Q-tip dipped in alcohol. It's effective but there are hard to reach areas so I sometimes pour alcohol on the plants.
However, I've encountered some problems. The mealybugs reappear after some days (new hatchlings maybe) so I'd have to do it again. I also noticed that the Dorstenias are dropping their leaves (probably as a result of me pouring alcohol on them). What's a better way to deal with the critters that's not/less harmful to the plants. I've read about diluting alcohol in water and adding dish detergent. A friend recommended malathion but I am afraid of using it because it would be harmful to me as well. Thanks

If you are in the US imidicloprid has worked well for me in controlling mealybug. I have heard from many sources that is does not work. Perhaps some populations have resistance? I use Bayer rose & flower.
