thinking about getting some lithops for the garden

Post by jmoney »

I love how lithops look and may end up getting some for the garden eventually. My only concern is how they might do with full sun exposure in Florida. Would they do alright if they received full sun for part of the day?

I don't think full sun will be the problem. Winter rain will be the problem. Maybe summer rain too. You get as much rain in some months as many Lithops expect in a year.

I've never tried it, but Lithops in the ground should be much less prone to overheating than those in a pot. They have a number of special adaptations to getting themselves warmed up while buried in the ground. These adaptations can be fatal in a pot. Their actual heat tolerance is very high but in direct sun they just heat up too fast and can't dump the heat into cool sub-surface soil.
