Can they be healthy and long lived with their roots all twisted up and potentially strangling each other? It looks really cool and interesting. Wonder how old those cuttings are.
My cactus must be gods. They demand blood sacrifice.

Yes, they can be both healthy and long lived. Amazing roots/caudex is just what they do! It also makes the plants interesting even when they aren't in bloom.

I dont know excactly as they are not mine, they might be around 7-10 years old(?) in our climate(Tropical country) planted in pots :)

bizarre. thank you for info. If they were a tree, roots like that would eventually kill it.

I may be more tempted next time i see a little one on the sale table at my favorite nursery.

I planted the cutting; we'll see how that goes. Thanks for the illustration, Hendry.

However, my original plant doesn't look very good where I snipped it- is this normal?

Scary isn't it? I think it will heal over and branch out from the edges of the healed area.

Keep that part away from water...
For the cutting, do not water it for about a week or more...Good luck

Here's a pic of mine that was cut similarly a few months ago, with two new branches beside growing beside the cut.
