Argh I hurt my Pachypodium namaquanum

I bought a Pachypodium namaquanum about a month ago. I knew it was a winter grower but I just wasn't sure how much watering I should be giving it since it had leaves. Big mistake, I watered it a bit. Then I checked it this past weekend and the caudex is soft and all the small roots are dead. I took off the small roots, but the thicker ones still seem fairly solid.

So I think I might be able to save it. So what should I do? I removed the small roots, and transplanted it to a medium of pure oil-dri. I haven't watered it. Maybe I should only water it once a month until I see activity??

They go soft when thirsty too. If it has leaves it needs water.

But would all the roots die because it needs water? The soil was more or less wet at the time I unspotted it. So I don't think it was a too-little issue. From what I can tell there are no active small roots as of now, so I don't think I should water it until further growth. But yes, I thought the same, has leaves, must want water.
