Dormant Opuntia

Post by dvdmsy »

Hi there,
In August and September last year I rooted an opuntia fragilis and a nopal pad. They both appear healthy, but neither have sprouted new pads. Can anyone recommend a method of waking up my cactus friends? I'm impatient.

Have you confirmed they rooted, or did you just plant a cutting a year ago? Cacti (and other succulents) can sit around without roots for a year or more. That is the first step in figuring out what is going on.

Are you growing them outside for the summer? If they are in the house it could be too dark.

They've rooted for sure, and they're outside, facing South and have been since around April 1.

Have you watered them? Have they received any water? They should grow like weeds given plenty of water. Opuntia fragilis is quite fine with being kept moist all the time.

Thanks for your replies. Yes, it rains all the time in the summer in NYC. I'm stumped.
