Stapelia and Huernia

Post by rrozzi »

I decided not to waste everyone's time until they finally flowered! Could you please help with ID?

As for the Stapeliad, the flower led me to think grandiflora but the stems coax me toward gigantea.

As for the Huerniad, it was labeled at a conservatory as H. erectiloba, and I have agreed until these flowers appeared.

Also, any hope for sexual reproduction? Each of the plants is a clone of a single parent unfortunately.

Thanks, and best wishes!

The Huernia is H. schneideriana. I think the Stapelia is S. grandiflora, but I will double check a reference book tomorrow. Definitely not S. gigantea. The flower is the wrong color and it isn't nearly big enough.

They can set seed with just one clone but the flowers are fairly complex and it is tricky to try to do it on your own. Flies are good at it but it looks like your plants are inside so it is unlikely to happen.

Great, thanks so much!

The only thing that confuses me about S. grandiflora is that I've seen a lot of pictures in which the stems are somewhat fuzzy and the wings are a lot more prominent, whereas the stems of mine are very waxy and with much less prominent wings. However I live in Indiana and know nothing about cultivated succulent variation.
