Found a vendor . . .

Post by peony »

and the rest is history. His 3-4 in pots were 3.99 and under for succulents. You can guess the rest. I have a few I need help identifying, if you don't mind. I've spent hours trying to identify. I did find most, but a few remain. At least they were inexpensive so that I feel a bit more free to take risks with them. I find them all beautiful. I hope these are succulents, I did try to identify them. Thanks. Phyllis

Kalanchoe synsepala
Euphorbia lactea (it seems)
Lophocereus schottii monstrose
Agave gypsophila (I believe)
Stapelia (seems likely to be S. gigantea, but you'll have to wait for blooms for ID confirmation)
maybe a type of Euphorbia or Myrtillocactus geometrizans (need more info or clear pix-are there thorns or spines? flowers on top now?)

Thanks so much for your response. I'm sorry about the poor pictures. I tried to take better ones. No spines on either plants in the last photo. I didn't realize that the smaller, squat one has little white dots on it. Tiny flowers on top, though.

The one you have 3 pictures of is Astrophytum myriostigma.

We actually thought that is what it might be (rather, my partner did), but it has no spines so we thought it not a cactus. Thanks! Also it seems like there is a lot of variation. Some Astrophytum myriostigma show three "lobes" and some have four or five. Interesting. Thanks.

Yes, Astrophytum it is (as Saxicola said). That was one of my guesses, but I got sidetracked trying to get my reply posted quickly. Yes, they are variable plants. Neat ones, too!

The other one you have a pic of last...seems to be another Lophocereus (like one above).

Thanks both so much for your help. We are very very new to succulents and cacti. I think we are going to enjoy it.

I am going to have to find where I can get a stapeliad or a Astrophytum in Montreal Canada. They seem so cool and rare to me that I don't know where to start. And you say you didn't have to pay much!

The four inch plants were 3.99, the gallon plants were 5 dollars, and the Bishop's hat was 9.00.

The vendor is Cactus King in Houston, Tx. I don't think they are recommended for mail order, but I had no problems with them in person.

That second photo - I believe it is Euphorbia antiquorum and the center is most likely to develop into a crest. I purchased a rooted cutting of the "normal form" of E. antiquorum from Cactus King about three years ago and it promptly crested on me. This year it started what I believe will be another crest.

My money would be on E. antiquorum.
