M. polythele inermis monstrose
Seeing this nice picture that Darryl posted.... http://www.cactiguide.com/forum/userpix/1079_mamm_1.jpg Made me think about the tubercle/areole information I've been reading. What is odd for a Mammillaria is; a. There are flowers coming from brand new tubercles at the apex of the plant. Mamms usuall...

There was a discussion a while ago about soaking seeds in Gibberellic acid before sowing to improve germination rate. The fellow who wrote the post seemed to think it improved his germination rate. I haven't tried it, myself. I just planted seeds I purchased online and got very variable results. Som...

That looks very similar to the damage I was getting. Any sense for the size of the teeth? The damage on my plants looked like it was made by very small teeth, which is why I guessed it was an Antelope Squirrel. Are they getting at your plants on the high shelves or just on tables/more easily accesse...

Yes, the Coryphantha book was my original source for the list of types. It made me think of tubercles/areoles in a much more organized way. Thubercles generally have three functions; spine/areole meristem to make the spines/glochids, etc, flower meristem, and offset or shoot meristem. In some genera...

Free Mammillaria grahamii/microcarpa/etc...
My clump of M. grahamii is cranking out fruit/seeds. I've already gotten more than I need. I have both the dark spined and golden spined varieties. Dark spined plant makes red fruit, golden spined plant makes pink fruit. I'll send you two red and one pink seed pod. You get to separate the seeds from...

This list was actually an expansion of Zimmermans' original list. I wasn't able to find much of anything on Zimmerman or anyone else on this topic online. This book was the first one that went into any detail on areole type in my experience. It seems to be applicable to the Coryphanta group, but the...

We got the twin of the Thursday night storm in the north valley last night. A big tree fell over in my neighbors yard. There were lots of chairs in the pool. Luckily, I only had very minor damage, four plants tipped over. Only one will require repotting. The rest just need to be topped up. It sure w...

Cactus Areole Types...
One of the things that blew my mind in the Coryphantha book I'm reading is that apparently someone studied and categorized the types of areoles found on cacti. I pulled out the list of 12 areole types and present them below.... Types of Areole Development - new interpretation of A. Zimmerman. 1. Ach...

I work in Tempe, and there were about 20 trees tipped over next to the freeway and on the street where my office is. Branches everywhere and lots of big trees tipped over. It was windy for a few minutes at my house (30 miles north), but we missed the brunt of this storm. We don't get much in the way...
