Re: Walmart Cactus and Succlent soil..
When it says "ideal for palms" it means it's a good exfoliator for your hands?

Re: Does that qualify?
Oops, my bad. "Pot" is the name most folks over here call marijuana. Since it's still illegal in most of the country, talking about a "pot garden" would definitely interest the local police.

Re: Does that qualify?
I'd say #1 would better be called a "pot garden" - but not if front of the local police.
Both are looking good.

A bit of confusion in the Guide?
I went looking for some info on Gymno friedrichii and came up with two entries, both with accompanying pics... Re: Can anybody ID bug?
@IvanC Thanks, but I'm pretty sure that it's not a fungus gnat, I've seen lots of them - they're why I've started to grow butterworts among my succulents. Harald, this is as clear as I've been able to get with a shot showing the wings. And I can't tell if they're frilled or not: DSCN1437a.JPG DSCN14...

As for the possible dangers of the latex sap, you might want to read http://www.theamateursdigest.com/epoisons.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. I'd definitely wear rubber gloves.

Re: Lollipop thoughts
No, you cannot grow a plant without chlorophyll using hydroponics or *almost* any other technique other than grafting. Plants do not uptake food through their roots (calling fertilizer "plant food" is a misnomer), the take in water and mineral nutrients. Photosyntesis uses carbon dioxide ...

Re: Lollipop thoughts
think about it this way? why would they graft them (other than to get them to grow faster, which I guess is totally related) if they didnt have too? One answer might be that even if they could grow roots, they would still have to have the special hydroponic-ish nutrients to survive at all. I wouldn...

Lollipop thoughts
Personally, I don't like the looks of the typical "lollipop" cactus. The Gymno mihanovichii + hylocereus just looks odd to me. On the other hand, the brightly colored Gymno is interesting, especially those with variagation. So I'm wondering if the Gymno is otherwise normal, except for the ...

Daiv, you may "learn more than you put in" but it was you that set up the friendly and accepting atmosphere of this place. Lots of forums thrive on flamewars, bullying noobies and general nastiness - but not here. If I can mix my metaphors, it may be taking a villiage to raise this baby bu...
