Re: Scars on my astrophytum asteria

Anything tan or brown is mechanical injury healed over with cork. This is extremely minor, in my opinion. I've had two Astros get huge bites taken out of them and you can't ever tell now (8 years later). If this were my plant I'd put it in a pot and make it a point to not look at that part of the pl...

Re: Can this cactus be green again?!

The bottom part won't be green again without spray paint. But seriously, you have a Cylindropuntia subulata. They are generally easy to deal with. Your best bet is going to be rooting the new growth. Cut (with a sterile knife) the offset right where it joins onto the main stem. Put it in a sha...

Re: What's covering my PEYOTE (LOPHOPHORA WILLIAMSII)

Lovely! It must be quite old?! I've had it since 2007, it was about 3" across when I got it. As you can see, I don't shampoo and brush the hair  . It's outside under shade cloth all the time. I get about 10 volunteers each year, they turn up in different pots here and there... Quite and ...

Nice, in a few months you should get some fruit.

This is one of my plants. You can tell I don't comb it's hair.

Re: Baby cactus update and EarthPods Cactus Food?

Can't provide anything useful on the food, but keep in mind that not all cactus grow vigorously all year. I always look at the apex of the plant for signs of new spine growth to tell me if a plant has "woken up" from it's winter slumber.

Re: Q = Best or recommended tweezers?

My experience with cheap tweezers is that they are cheap and usually aren't up to the task of grasping tiny spines/glochids. They generally aren't up to the task of gripping human hair all that well, either. Get something decent, then examine carefully to make sure the gripping surfaces are parallel...

Re: Stenocactus with yellow flowers?

Before the "Great Stenocactus Shake-up" the yellow flowered ones were 'sulphureus'. I have no idea what the current organization is.

Re: Tuberous root of Mammillaria bocasana

Agreed, and sometimes I am a pedantic jerk! To be more informal about it, I believe napiform roots can (and maybe should?) be more commonly called taproots. When I was looking around for references, it seems that taproots are a more general term that covers napiform, conical, fusiform and tub...

Re: Tuberous root of Mammillaria bocasana

Not meaning to be a pedantic jerk, these are all napiform roots. Tuberous roots are truly like potatoes, not like a turnip.

But hey, call them what you like!

Re: Agave ID

It looks variegated in the center of the leaf which would mean it's likely 'mediopicta". There is an Agave americana mediopicta alba. They can get quite large in the right setting, nearly 2 meters in size. Is the plant pictured 50-75 cm? Its hard to tell for certain. If it is an A. americana, t...

Turbis are not long-lived flowers. They make up for that in volume as they get older.

M. hutchinsonia ssp. louisae? You'll need flowers to make a good ID.

Re: Edwin Dwianto

My key for identifying T. polaskii is that mine turn red in the winter, moreso than the other Turbis. Not sure if you have the climate to turn them red, though. Mine are still brick red. The whole is the pollen ripe and/or is the stigma receptive thing is a mystery to me. My biggest challenge is to ...
