http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b39/CFODAL/th_DCP_9541bw.jpg Here's the view from Apache Leap, supposedly named after an 1860s incident where a surprise attack by the U.S. military led to several Apaches jumping off of the sheer cliffs rather than face capture. The butte in the background is Pick...

I have heard that Carnegieas tapping into septic tanks put on amazing growth in a short time. But that might just be an urban myth.

Good luck with growing a giant indoors!

Nice photos peterb! You should check out the view sometime from atop Apache Leap (the sheer cliffs in the background of the last photo, first post). I have a photo somewhere. I'll try to dig it up.

Those masonry greenhouses are fantastic! Some history there, too.

On the subject of nests, here's a roadrunner that built a nest in my carport. The nest was so spindly that I had to reinforce it to keep the eggs from crashing to the ground.

Ferocactus acanthodes?

These are both from Yavapai County, Arizona. I think they are Ferocactus acanthodes. What do you think? The last shot shows the typical environment. This may be the only place where Joshua Tree (Yucca brevifolia) and saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea) commingle naturally. http://i16.photobucket.com/albums...

Well horned lizards are pretty common around here, but as you can see, they really blend in. Unlike other lizards that dart away from you, these guys only move when you are about to step on them.

Wow Tim, that's quite a meticulous procedure. My next question--if the roots get trimmed, agressively or minimally, can they go back in the same pot, or should you upgrade? The rationale being if the root trimming promotes new growth, and now the roots have room to move through the pot, you can use ...

If I had a photo, you'd understand what I mean, but let me just say that the roots were running circles around the margins of the pot and seriously, it was compacted like a brick. It would have been extremely traumatic for the plant, due to high root loss, to simply break apart the soil to remove th...

I turned the pot over and tapped the sides until the whole enchilada came out in one piece, like a brick. (what can I say?, I didn't know how to pot cactus until recently). So I used a fine mist to separate the soil from the rootlets. There did not appear to be a whole lot of torn roots via this met...

I guess my dilemma is similar to that discussed in this recent, hotly debated topic... Root Structure . I'm going to trim back about 1-2 cm of the finer roots. Either way, with its substantial root system, and a new, aerated soil medium, it should show some improvement next year...or still yet this ...

Good tips. I'm glad to know that unplanted, robust cuttings can survive in stasis for so long. I probably will just let them stay in a warm, dry place and replant them in the spring.

Trim the roots or not?

I've had these Escobaria for about five years. They never did much, growthwise. Maybe because they were too cramped, I don't know. Anyway, I just took them out of their pot for the first time today to change to a better soil and was surprised by the root mass. Would they benefit by my trimming off t...
